This is unlike any other book I have read this year. It is based in Nigeria and centres around a 15-year-old girl named Kambili whose father is a devoted Catholic and a noble philanthropist to the world, but is abusive to his family. He claims that everything he does is to keep his family in heaven, but all he causes is pain to them. Kambili and her 17-year-old brother Jaja are sent to live with their Aunt Ifeoma, where they see that their traditional family isn’t as perfect as they have been brought up to believe. I really liked this book though it is heavier than some of the others on this list. I would recommend this to anyone over the age of 13.
