The Divergent Series

Veronica Roth

Divergent takes place in a city that is said to be the last in the world. The rest of the world was destroyed in a violent and bloody war. To maintain a peaceful environment, the city was divided into five factions, one each for those classified as brave, selfless, kind, honest or intelligent. But no matter how peaceful the city seems, trouble is brewing underneath. When 16-year-old Beatrice Prior finds out she is a divergent, a person who belongs to more than one faction, she must go to extreme lengths to keep the secret. Beatrice soon learns about a growing conspiracy that threatens all those like her, and she goes on a quest to find the truth. There are three books in this series. I liked that this series was a good blend of suspense and adventure. It is also a dystopian novel and is similar to Hunger Games.

The character of Tris was poorly written, and I felt that Four's character was better suited to play a villain. The romance felt forced after the first book, and as Tris and Fours’ relationship strained, so did the quality of the writing and story. While I would read this for fun, it isn’t a very good read that will have you obsessed, unlike The Hunger Games.
