^This series is set in a dystopian world where humans have mastered death. In order to control the population, scythes are chosen to imitate death, choosing humans to kill under their quotas. When both Rowan and Citra are chosen as interns for Scythe Faraday, they learn about deadly poisons, martial arts and how to use different weapons. When Rowan and Citra are told that only one of them can become a scythe and they would have to glean (kill) the other, they are struck with a tragedy. Now in the hands of different scythes, Rowan with a bloodthirsty, deadly scythe, who was growing in power and Citra with an honourable, fair scythe, they are prepared for their final test, where one will be chosen, and the other will be killed. They also have to fight against a bloodthirsty scythe who wishes to kill without remorse and wants the entire scythedom to do the same.
