This book focuses on the story of an innocent German boy named Bruno. Bruno’s father works for Hitler or, as they call him, "the Fury". When Bruno’s family is forced to move from Berlin to a deserted area, Bruno makes friends with a Jewish boy on the other side of a ‘fence’. Throughout the story, we see themes of friendship and innocence in a world designed to take such things away. I have read many books based on WW2, but this is one of my favourites. This was my reader in school this year. I feel that this is a must-read for all children, but I do not advise children under the age of 10 to read it as some of the final scenes are quite upsetting.
