World War II/Religion

Number The Stars

Lois Lowry

This book is the story of two girls. One of them is Jewish, and the other is Christian. During World War II, a relationship like this could save or risk your life. The Nazis did not treat the Jews like they were people. So when the Nazis come to collect the Jews from their neighbourhood, the two families go on a journey. One to escape to Switzerland and one to protect them on the way. This story about bravery and loyalty introduces kids to the horrors of World War II while giving them a happy ending. This is a great novel to introduce kids to WWII, though any kids under 10 may get scared. The plotline will seem flat for older kids, so I would recommend it to anyone under 12-13.
