This book is based on discrimination due to colour. Jordan Banks is a black boy starting Grade 7 in a new school where he is one of the few black students. Going to a new school is hard enough, but in a place where people are discriminated against based on their colour, it’s even harder. This is a Newberry Award-winning graphic novel for 2020. I didn't understand many of the cultural references in this book because I live in India. For instance, I did not understand why the gift of fried chicken or basketball cookies was offensive. I later understood it better by speaking to my parents, who have lived in America.
